Dad's memories

Lou, at the age of 17, worked for Jersey European Airlines at Exeter International Airport. After a while, she found out that she could use her connections at the airport to get cheap flights. So, being the fun loving girl that she was, she would go travelling with her brother Robert. Well, except that is, Rob could not go, so Dad was cagouled to go, on the premise that it was a cheap holiday. Mum was ordered to drive Lou and Dad to Exeter St David’s…..as the flight went from Birmingham Airport! Things went swimmingly for the first three days, until I realised that Lou was not spending any money. It was then she confessed that she had not actually brought any money with her, as her wages had not gone into her bank account on time. The problem was, I had not budgeted for paying for 2 on this weeks holiday. So the money poor Mum had given me for her Duty Free was exhausted by the end of the holiday. However, worse was yet to come! As we arrived at Palma Airport on the way home, Lou revealed to me that there was a possibility that there would not be any seats available on the flight home as they were subsidised tickets. Sure enough, on checking in, we were told that the flight was full. I sat down contemplating the 10 hour wait for the next flight. Lou got up and went to the counter using all of her charm and pleading, but to no avail… so we thought. As the flight was boarding along came a member of staff who whisked us off to the departure point and ushered us on to the waiting Airbus. They kept us waiting until all passengers were seated, then, to our surprise, we were lead to the cockpit and had the best seats in the house! 1 behind the pilot and 2 behind the co-pilot. So, in having the most charismatic daughter, we had secured a flight home. My Lou had managed to turn a horror into a glamorous victory. Arriving home, tired but relieved, Lou, in her indomitable way, smiled at her Mum and joked that the holiday had been a blinding success. Nobody mentioned the Duty Free, but thank goodness she had been paid……. shame about the luggage! Dad
